Our stack is aggressively conventional: Next.js, TypeScript, Postgres, a CDN. No experimental runtimes, no bleeding-edge state libraries, no architecture that requires a conference talk to justify. Clients occasionally ask why a studio that sells distinctive work runs on such ordinary machinery.
Because novelty is a budget, and we spend all of it where visitors can see it.
Innovation tokens
Every project can absorb a limited amount of unproven technology before risk compounds — call them innovation tokens. Spend one on an untested database and you'll pay it back in migration guides and 2 a.m. incident channels. Spend it on scroll choreography, a signature interaction, a type system nobody's seen — and the payback is the reason the site gets remembered.
The studios shipping the most visually radical work in the world run on boring rails. That's not a coincidence; it's the trade that makes the radical part affordable.
Boring is not slow
Conventional infrastructure is fast precisely because it's conventional. The framework's rendering paths are optimized by thousands of production deployments. The database's failure modes are documented in a decade of postmortems. Hosting is a solved problem with an SLA. When the foundation requires zero attention, all attention goes to craft.
There's a hiring argument too, and it belongs to the client: a site built on standard tools can be maintained by any competent team, not just the agency that built it. We consider that a feature of our work, not a leak. Vendor lock-in through exotic architecture is a business model; it just isn't ours.
Where we do take risks
Interaction design. Motion systems. Typography. Generated art. The visible layer is where we prototype, discard, and occasionally ship something we've never seen anyone do. Visitors experience that layer; they never experience the database. An unfamiliar rendering strategy buys the visitor nothing. An unfamiliar hero buys the brand everything.
Ambition and risk aren't the same axis. Put the ambition where it's seen. Put the boredom where it holds weight.
